Contrary to jokes about the matter, modern endodontic treatment is very similar to having a routine filling and usually can be completed in one or two appointments.

A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form.

It is easy to ignore the effects of poor oral hygiene because they are hidden in your mouth. But gum disease may point to problems with diabetes and heart disease and loose teeth could be a sign of osteoporosis.

A tooth’s nerve is not vitally important to a tooth’s health and function after the tooth has emerged through the gums. Its only function is sensory – to provide the sensation of hot and cold. The presence or absence of a nerve will not affect the day-to-day functioning of the tooth.

When nerve tissue or pulp is damaged, it breaks down and bacteria begin to multiply within the pulp chamber. The bacteria and other decayed debris can cause an infection or abscessed tooth. An abscess is a pus-filled pocket that forms at the end of the roots of the tooth. An abscess occurs when the infection spreads all the way past the ends of the roots of the tooth. In addition to an abscess, an infection in the root canal of a tooth can cause:

  • Swelling that may spread to other areas of the face, neck or head.
  • Bone loss around the tip of the root.
  • Drainage problems extending outward from the root. A hole can occur through the side of the tooth with drainage into the gums or through the cheeks with drainage into the skin.

Insurance

POLICIES

Smile Dental Clinic is happy to extend the courtesy of accepting assignment of benefits from most insurance companies for our existing patients. New patients wanting this courtesy extended to them will need to provide their insurance details prior to securing an appointment with us so that we may verify benefits. Predeterminations may be submitted to the insurance company to verify what the insurance company will pay out on a procedure.

Each year, many clients lose out on hundreds of dollars through their dental insurance provider, simply because time has slipped away. We know life gets busy and before you know it, another year has come and gone and you have not seen your dentist. Don’t forget to take advantage of your remaining dental insurance benefits before the end of the year! Call our office today to schedule an appointment at Smile Dental Clinic.

"Assignment of Benefits" is a legally binding agreement between you and your Insurance Company, asking them to send your reimbursement checks directly to your dentist. When our office accepts an assignment of benefits, we often have to wait 4 to 6 weeks for your insurance reimbursement to arrive. We extend assignment benefits to our patients as a courtesy knowing that this service will help with financial obligations. Extending this service means helping you continue your treatment in a prompt manner without heavy out of pocket expenses. Dental offices are not required by any legislation in Cayman to do so, however, we are happy to accept assignment and wait for our reimbursement of services. Please note that we also have the right to revoke this benefit at any time if your insurance company practices certain "Nuisance Behaviours".

For your convenience we also except Visa, MasterCard, Debit Cards, Cash and Checks.
